Houston’s Water

February 27, 2025

Where do Houstonians get their water?

Houston’s water supply is drawn from a rich and varied mix of sources. Encompassing both surface water and groundwater to meet the needs of its residents and businesses. The city primarily relies on surface water from several key rivers and reservoirs. Lake Livingston and Lake Houston playing pivotal roles as major contributors to the municipal water system. These reservoirs are carefully managed to ensure a consistent and reliable supply throughout the year.

Underground Aquifers

In addition to these surface sources, Houston also taps into underground aquifers. They provide crucial backup water supplies, especially during periods of drought or increased demand. The city employs advanced purification plants to treat this water before it is distributed. This ensures that it meets stringent safety and health standards for consumption.

How Clean is Our Water?

The phrase “safe and clean” reflects the rigorous treatment processes that assure the water is free from harmful pathogens and pollutants, thus minimizing the risk of illness for those who consume it. However, it is important to note that “safe” does not necessarily equate to “pleasant.” The chemicals used in the purification process, such as chlorine and chloramine, can impart undesirable flavors to the water. Historically, chlorine was the primary disinfectant used, but as certain pathogens evolved to resist chlorine, many water systems, including Houston’s, have shifted to using chloramine. This compound is composed of chlorine and ammonia, making it a more potent disinfectant but also contributing to a less appealing taste.

What do we put in our water?

Understanding the implications of these treatment processes is essential, particularly concerning the potential health risks associated with certain chemicals. For example, ammonia, while effective in disinfecting, can be harmful in high concentrations. This underscores the importance of having a well-designed filtration system that not only ensures compliance with health regulations but also enhances the overall quality of drinking water. Such filtration systems can effectively remove unwanted chemicals and contaminants, thereby improving taste and safety and providing clean, palatable water for all who rely on it.
