So we hear the term Reverse Osmosis when we talk about home water filtration systems. But precisely what does this mean? What is reverse osmosis, and why is it the best, most economical water filtration method available today?

What is Reverse Osmosis?

The magic behind any RO (Reverse Osmosis) System happens with the membrane element. It is a specialized concentric permeable membrane capable of filtering all but the smallest particles out of water. It is so effective that it can even filter bacteria or viruses. But it is susceptible to the chemicals added to water at the municipal water treatment plants. That is why an RO system features two additional stages to prepare water before entering the reverse osmosis stage. The first stage would be a sediment filter that catches the larger particles in water. It is followed by one or two carbon filters that remove these chemicals from the water, conditioning it for membrane filtration. All this happens each time you open your RO faucet to get refreshing clean water from the system.

Aside from having an RO system installed in your home, pairing it up with a water softening system is highly recommended. Soft water is much more easily conditioned by an RO system, aside from getting all the added benefits of having soft running water throughout your home.
